I taught in the Kansas City, Missouri School District for two years before moving to Austin, Texas. I have taught at my current school since 1994, teaching study skills and English/Language Arts and Publications English. This year I will also be teaching Video Technology and Web Design.
One of the greatest things about this school is the opportunities that teachers are given to expand their own learning. My principal was very encouraging and supportive as I worked to earn my M.Ed. from the University of Texas while teaching.
My husband and I have four kids between the two of us…. three sons and one daughter. We also have five grandchildren ranging from 2 to 12 years old. They live in Anchorage, Alaska and Kansas City and we enjoy visiting with them. Having grandchildren is even better than having kids!
There are many things I enjoy — gardening, cooking, traveling, sewing, but by far, my favorite things to do is read! It always surprises me when I hear people say they don’t like reading. How can that be, I wonder? Reading is my relaxation and my escape from the world. I guess growing up as the oldest with four siblings made me figure out a way to get away from them. Now I hide from housework and grading papers!
I want this blog to be a place where my students can all share ideas and participate in conversations about our learning. Sometimes, I’ve noticed, the students who are most outgoing, most vocal, get their ideas heard during class discussions, but students who are more shy (more polite about blurting out, maybe?), or who think about things more carefully — it seems that those students don’t get as many chances to share with their classmates. Perhaps blogging will make it easier for all students to participate in discussions. I guess we’ll find out!
So far, I have spent this summer going to lots of workshops and working in my yard, in addition to reading. I am anxiously awaiting the publication of the newest Harry Potter book, and also the final book in Christopher Paolini’s Eragon series.
